Evaluating the Resurrection

Evaluating the Resurrection

According to the "apostle" Paul, the faith of a Hebrew-Christian must stand or fall on a single alleged fact: the resurrection of Jesus. In Paul's own words, "if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless" (1 Cor. 15:17). Are the accounts of Jesus' resurrection in the Christian bible believable -- or have you, like Esau, traded your holy birthright for a bowl of worthless soup? Following is a short Biblical study to assist you in evaluating this most central of Christian claims. We pra

Luke 2:4,5 -Was Mary a descendant of David?

Luke 2:4,5 -Was Mary a descendant of David?

According to the author of Luke, Joseph came to Bethlehem "because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register, along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child" (Luke 2:4-5). Does this verse show that Mary was a descendant of David? Answer: There is nothing in these verses to show that Joseph and Mary were both of Davidic ancestry and, therefore, going to the same town to register. As his future spouse, one might stretch credulity to the maximum and presume that M

The Roman Census in Luke - actually carried out?

The Roman Census in Luke - actually carried out?

The author of Luke writes: "Now it came about in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all were proceeding to register for the census, everyone to his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register

What about Matthew, Hosea 11:1 and being called out of Egypt?

What about Matthew, Hosea 11:1 and being called out of Egypt?

What are the implications of the author of Matthew using Hosea 11:1 to describe Mary, Joseph, and Jesus being called out of Egypt? Answer: Matthew 2:13-15 makes the claim that Mary, Joseph, and Jesus fled to Egypt until recalled by an angel. This is supposedly in fulfillment of a prophecy: "Out of Egypt did I call My son." The source of the so-called prophecy is Hosea 11:1. However, in the context of the verse as found in Hosea there is no prophecy, but simply a restating of Israelite history.

Who's genealogy is given by Luke?

Who's genealogy is given by Luke?

Doesn't it make sense to say that the Gospel of Luke gives Mary's  genealogy, since it would be nonsense to go through Joseph's line if he is not the biological father of Jesus? It should be noted that the Gospel of Matthew sets the precedent for presenting a genealogy of Jesus that goes through Joseph. Incidentally, this genealogy goes through a line (Jehoiakim) that is disqualified for kingship. Therefore, it is not surprising that Luke's genealogical list also gives a genealogy (much differe

Who is the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus?

Who is the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus?

Who is the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus? Let's find out in this interesting post. Now, this Answer depends on whether a Christian prefers the Gospel of Matthew or the Gospel of Luke. Matthew and Luke differ in their respective accounts of Jesus' genealogy (Matthew 1:1-16, Luke 3:23-38). Luke states: "And Jesus began to be about thirty years old . . . the son of Joseph, the son of Heli, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi . . . the son of Nathan, the son of David. . .

Sign of the Virgin

Sign of the Virgin

Christian Bibles render Isaiah 7:14 as, "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call his name Immanuel." Isn't a virgin being with child an outstanding "sign"? On the contrary! It is no "sign" at all. Mary's alleged virginity was not something that could be openly displayed as a proof that something out of the ordinary happened. People would only scoff at such a claim no matter how virtuous the girl was thought to be. A "
